- Real Inflation-Adjusted Return Rate: $(\frac{1.08}{1.03} - 1) \times 100 = \mathbf{4.854% \text{ / year}}$
By compounding my portfolio at a 4.854% real monthly rate ($r_m = (1.04854)^{1/12} - 1 = 0.395% / month$), my target $1,125,000 nest egg is calculated in today’s purchasing power dollars.
When I reach my FI Date in September 2040, my actual nominal bank balance will be higher, but its real buying power will match $1,125,000 today—guaranteeing that my $3,750/month passive income will cover my real living costs!

1. Eliminate Fixed Housing & Transportation Creep
Housing and transportation account for 60% of average household spending. Moving to a less expensive home, getting a roommate, or driving a reliable paid-off car instead of leasing new vehicles will instantly free up hundreds of dollars a month for investments.
2. Automate Monthly Investment Contributions
Treat your investments like a mandatory bill. Set up automatic monthly transfers from your checking account into low-cost index funds on the 1st of every month. What gets automated gets saved.
