For example, marked down from $150 to $120:

The Math Behind Stacking Discounts (Double Discounts)
Retailers frequently advertise promotions such as "Take 40% off clearance items, plus get an extra 10% off at register."
Many shoppers make the mistake of adding these percentages together and expecting a 50% discount. In reality, stacked discounts are compound, not additive.
The first discount of 40% is applied to the original retail price. The secondary discount of 10% is then applied *only* to that new, lower intermediate price.
For a $100 item:

Stores use stacked discounts (e.g., "50% off + 20% off") for two main reasons: 1) Psychology: "50% + 20%" sounds like a massive 70% off to casual shoppers, inducing urgency, and 2) Margin Protection: It is mathematically cheaper for the retailer. Offering 50% and then 20% sequentially translates to a 60% total reduction, protecting the store's margins by 10% compared to a flat 70% off.
